Obituary for Sally Watters Marshall

Sally Watters Marshall

Schenectady, NY - Sally Watters Marshall, of Schenectady, NY, died on July 17, 2016 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY.

Born August 30, 1928 in New York City, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Win H. Watters of Scarsdale, NY. She attended Scarsdale High School and Rogers Hall, and graduated from Smith College in 1950.

Her father, Dr. Win H. Watters, was director of Orthopedics at Beekman Downtown Hospital in New York from 1928-1960. Sally was the granddaughter of Henry F. Holtorf, who founded and operated H. Holtorf Grocers on the corner of Park Avenue and E. 75th Street, from the late 1890s until his death in 1937.

Sally worked at the Lake Success United Nations in the admissions office from 1950 to 1952. She was then secretary to the Managing Editor of the N.Y. Herald Tribune from 1952-1955. In January of 1955, she married Robert Allen Marshall of Yonkers, NY. They lived in Wilton, CT until moving to Schenectady, NY in 1958.

In retirement, Sally and Bob lived in Dataw Island, SC, Amelia Island, FL, and Sarasota, FL. Whether on the lake, in it, or beside it, Lake George was Sally's favorite place. For over 20 years Sally served as a patrol and operated a spectator boat for the sailing races at NLGYC while her husband Bob, and sons David and Peter, raced Flying Juniors and Stars. Time in the sun and time swimming were an essential part of each day at Lake George. An avid tennis player until her late 50s, she took up golf later in life. She learned quickly, proudly scoring a hole-in-one on the 8th hole of the Morgan River Golf Course while in her late 60s.

Sally was a member of the First Reformed Church of Schenectady where both her children were christened, and her husband Bob was a deacon. She was a member of the Stephens Ministries of the First Reformed Church from 1985-1990, and was a volunteer at Hospice of Schenectady from 1985-1990. She was a member of the Junior League of Schenectady, the Schenectady Garden Club, Queens Fort, the Smith College Club of Schenectady, AAUW (American Association of University Women), the Mohawk Golf Club, and the Northern Lake George Yacht Club.

She is survived by her son David Robert Marshall of Jacksonville, FL, and granddaughter, Kelly Elise Marshall of New York, NY, her son Peter Watters Marshall and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Lord of Randolph Center, VT,. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Robert Allen Marshall, and sisters Anne Watters Green and Joan Watters.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on July 31, 2016, at the First Reformed Church, 8 North Church Street, Schenectady, NY.
